Hong Leong Asia Ltd and its Group of companies ("the Group") have supplied and manufactured essential building and construction products for close to 60 years. These products are used by the public sector for infrastructure development in Singapore such as public housing, the Mass Rapid Transit system, roads and expressways. Within the private sector, its products are used in residential and commercial developments.

Today, the Group is one of the most integrated building materials suppliers in Singapore and the region. Its main businesses are: - The manufacture of pre-cast concrete products, ready-mix concrete, quarry products and plastic pipe products; and - The trading and distribution of structural steel, steel bars and cement.

Vertically integrated operations give the Group a winning edge in the control it exercises, firstly over the quality, timeliness and cost of raw materials and more importantly, over the final product.

For example, its raw materials of cement, steel bars and aggregate are used in-house for its pre-cast concrete and ready-mix concrete operations.

These internal synergies allow the Group to offer competitive prices, while its experience enables it to understand customers' needs and respond promptly to market trends.

Pre-cast Concrete Products

Substantially all of Hong Leong Asia's pre-cast concrete products are sold to main contractors in Singapore and Hong Kong.

A key player in Singapore, the Group is one of the selected few suppliers accorded a L6 registration by the Building and Construction Authority, enabling it to tender for public sector contracts of unlimited value for pre-cast concrete products. In Hong Kong, it owns a factory in New Territories and is one of the pre-cast producers, supplying mainly to public housing projects.

The Group also manufactures spun concrete pipes (up to 2.4 metres in diameter) which are used mainly in civil engineering projects. Pre-casting of concrete products reduces the construction industry's dependence on foreign labour, ensures greater consistency of quality, faster construction completion time and higher productivity. Consumption in Singapore is expected to increase in line with the Housing & Development Board's (HDB) policy of using more pre-cast concrete elements.

Ready-Mix Concrete Products
Subsidiary Island Concrete is one of the largest suppliers of ready-mixed concrete in Singapore. Established since 1970, Island Concrete has six wet-mix and one dry-mix concrete batching plants strategically located at Sungei Kadut, Kaki Bukit and Liu Fang and a fleet of 123 truck mixers. Using the latest available fully computerized batching systems; each plant can produce concrete at the rate of more than 100m3 per hour. Each plant can operate on a 24-hour basis as and when required.

Island Concrete has supplied ready-mixed concrete to numerous prestigious projects such as Changi International Airport Terminal 1, several sections of the MRT system, major expressways and major commercial projects such as King's Centre, OCBC Centre, OUB Centre, Republic Plaza and Suntec City.

Granite Quarry Products
The Rock Man : Karimun Granite

Karimun Granite's quarry is one of the largest in the Southeast Asia and is also the largest producer of Marine Rocks/Armouring Stone in this region.

Karimun Granite has been supplying the majority of the reclamation projects that Singapore has embarked on besides crushed granite aggregate for use in ready-mixed concrete. Not only has it supplied a large quantity of rocks, it also has produced some of the most stringent quality rock of various sizes required for the multi-billion dollar reclamation projects.

Today, Karimun Granite has several orders for Marine Rocks well in excess of 2 million tons for delivery over 2002 and 2003.

Cement Products
The Group has held the exclusive distributorship of the Onoda brand of Ordinary Portland Cement since 1956. Associated company Singapore Cement Manufacturing Company (a joint venture with Taiheiyo Cement of Japan), imports, stores and packs the quality product while Hong Leong Asia is the sole distributor in Singapore. The cement is sold mainly in bulk to customers such as the HDB, ready-mix concrete companies, precast concrete companies including Hong Leong Asia Ready Mix susidiaries. Cement is also packed into bags for sale to contractors and wholesalers.

Structural Steel and Re-bar Products
With a comprehensive inventory of more than 100 structural steel products and sufficient stock to meet spot demand, the Group is one of the largest and most dependable stockists in the region. Its products are used in shipbuilding and repair, infrastructure projects and the construction industry. The majority of its local steel bars are sold, on an indent basis, to contractors involved in public housing and other projects.
